Ever since childhood Joan has wanted to draw and paint, however life left very little time until retirement. She can now spend more time developing the talent that God has given her, and has embraced this time with fervor.
Her passion is color! When she see beautiful color and vibrant light, she wants to paint it. After a trip to the Louvre in Paris, France in 1983, she began to paint in oils. Joan enjoys the works of the "old Masters" and is inspired by viewing their works in museums. Due to its speed in accomplishment and the vibrancy of the watercolor palette, she began using watercolors for her paintings in 1997 and has embraced it ever since.
Joan is also a student of the Art of Iconography and has painted many Religious Icons in the Russian Byzantine Tradition. She has studied this art with the Prosopon School of Iconography taught by Master Iconographer, Vladislav Andreyev and apprentices for the past five years. Her Iconography can be viewed by appointment at her home and on this website.
Joan has attended workshops and studied with local and internationally known artists. Her work has appeared in shows at various Galleries in Ohio and Michigan, and One-woman shows. She has won awards for her work.
She is a member and past President of the Lima Area Watercolor Society; Transparent Watercolor Society of America; Wassenberg Art Center; Art/Space Lima and the Birmingham Watercolour Society, UK. She teaches Art to students in her area in her home Studio.
She is the wife of Hap Barnes and mother of four children, David Barnes, Linda Bjerke, Paul Barnes and Steve Barnes. She and Hap have been blessed with nine grandchildren.
